Hong Kong

July 1999, May 2000

These pictures are from the two trips I took to Hong Kong.  Hong Kong is kind of like New York City with a very large Chinatown.  It is extremely modern with many very impressive skyscrapers, yet it is distinctly Chinese.  And if you want to sample food from all over China on the cheap, this is the place.  It definitely has a carnival atmosphere to it.  Just be careful where you spit!

A busy Chinese market in Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island. The very impressive Lippo Centre. One of the not-so-modern buildings in Hong Kong. The Bank of China building, central Hong Kong.
View of Hong Kong Island across the harbor from Kowloon. The breathtaking view of Hong Kong from Victoria Peak. The view is even more incredible at night. A market on Kowloon.
The countdown to the new millenium. Crossing the harbor on the Star Ferry en route to Kowloon. Looking down Nathan Road on Kowloon. The firing of the noonday gun.  A leftover from the days of British rule, this gun is fired everyday at noon for some reason that's not clear to me.
