Hiroshima- September 1999

The various monuments commemorating the dead at Hiroshima's Peace Park adjacent to the Peace Museum.  About 200,000 people died as a result of the bomb.  In the center of the middle picture is a flame which will burn until all the world's nuclear weapons are eliminated.

A model of what Hiroshima looked like after the A-bomb was dropped at the Peace Museum.  The red ball above the model indicates where the bomb exploded. The hypocenter of the explosion. The A-bomb dome (formerly the Industrial Promotion Hall).  The remains of this building are left as a reminder of the devastation.  The bomb exploded almost directly over the building. Aioi-bashi bridge by Peace Park.

Hiroshima Castle. Hon-dori shopping arcade.  Besides the girl, what else is interesting about this picture? Taking in the ballgame, Hiroshima Carp vs. Yokohama Baystars.  Here the Carp's mascot is leading a cheer for the home team. My travel companions Kristen, Greg, and Andrei, on the ferry to Miyajima.

Miyajima Island is off the coast near Hiroshima (60 minutes by tram and ferry).  It features the famous floating torii, Itsukushima-jinja Shrine, and some very aggressive deer that will steal food out of your hands.
One of Miyajima's residents offers his welcome. The floating torii, which in this picture is floating in mud at low tide. Itsukushima-jinja Shrine.  Notice the collapsed roof just right of center.  This was caused by a typhoon that had passed through earlier in the day.
This was as close as we got to the rope way to the top of Mt Misen, which was shut down by the typhoon. A lonely bridge in the forest. The floating torii at dusk (and high tide).
